Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy one jar?
Smith & Truslow Organic Gift Boxes of 6, 9, and 12 jars are the most eco-friendly and efficient way for us to fill orders. However, if you are looking for fewer spices, you can order a minimum of three spices—jars or refill bags—on the À La Carte page.
My order just arrived. Why do spices I ordered at the same time have different expiration dates?
The flavor in spices and herbs degrades at different rates. Most spice seeds retain their optimum flavor for 1 to 3 years. Once ground, the essential oils in the spice are released, and the flavor dissipates more quickly. Most ground spices retain their optimum flavor for 6 months to a year. Dried herbs usually retain their flavor for 6 months to a year. Information on the shelf life of specific spices can be found when you link from the Spices & Herbs page.
How does the Fresh & Flavorful Plan work?
The Fresh & Flavorful Plan helps ensure you always have spices full of flavor. This annual plan includes two shipments. Your first shipment will arrive in 6 months, with refill packages for the spices in your order that lose their optimum flavor after 6 months. The second shipment will occur in 12 months, and you'll receive refill packages for all of the spices in your original order.
Your refills will arrive in air-tight plastic bags. Simply snip the corner of your bag, refill your Smith & Truslow spice jar, apply the new top label, and recycle the bag.
Is your packaging organic?
Smith & Truslow only carries 100% certified organic products. While our packaging is not “organic”, our goal is always to be environmentally responsible. Every piece of our packaging is recyclable. Our boxes and printed pieces are on stock that is 100% recycled, and in many instances contains 30% post-consumer waste. When possible, we choose to work with printers certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and we print only with water-based inks.
